Do Your Small Good

Is this a difficult time, love?

Are the images too much, the needs too great?  Have you unplugged everything you’re capable of unplugging, and still … the stories and images find their way into your consciousness.

I switch on holiday music, or yes, White Christmas will do … anything to remind me that it is, indeed, the Christmas season.  But the images are always there, in my mind.  Tiny ghostly figures, dark, blank eyes, powder white faces topped with hair, matted and crusted with blood.  And just beneath that horror, young warriors standing firm ground to protect water, to protect Mother Earth.

You feel it too, I suspect.  Angst.  Most in my generation have never experienced these images before … whether they were hidden from us, or whether this is ground so new that none of us knows what to do with it.

In the midst of enjoying twinkling lights, the feeling of helplessness swells.  Enjoying anything feels a grotesque betrayal of what we know is just.

So we can hide, we can take temporary comfort, we can turn away for a time and regain balance.

But I ask, for you not to lose hope.  Turn away for a time, but come back.  See the faces.  Know that this is happening, and that we can choose to spread love, rather than despair.

Those who endure these atrocities continue putting one foot in front of another.  One hour, one moment at a time, to find their way out of the dust.  To find their way to a doctor, to a safe home, to a bus, to a warm teepee, to the safety of comrades.  This, we can do, as well.

Cup a hand around your flame … when the icy wind threatens to extinguish it.  It is vital that you protect it.  Keep it burning, even just a little.

And when you are stronger, when you have replenished, and when you can bring constructive good to the world, do that.  In any small way, do that.

Pay a kindness, cook a healthy meal, smile at someone you might not have … do your small good.  With each small good you will find a bit of strength.  You’ll know that you can do another, and another.

Yes love, do that.

Take special good care ~
Love,
