The First Ten Lion Portraits are Complete!

Follow along as I create portraits of the 33 lions rescued from illegal circuses by Animal Defenders International!  As a lifetime lion-lover, the stories of their rescue fill my heart.  Sadly, we’ve lost four of the lions, but we can delight that 29 of the lions live peacefully at beautiful Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary, in South Africa.

**  I donate a portion of my portrait sales to Animal Defenders International to help with the lions ongoing care.

Read their stories, and join me as we fall in love with these beautiful big cats.

 Rey

Rey is the king of the Cusco pride.

During a dangerous and difficult rescue from a circus in Peru, Rey and his mate were taken to safety, while the circus withheld their two cubs.  11 days later, ADI returned to the circus to take custody of the cubs, along with Rey’s brother, Smith.

Due to the continued dedication of ADI, and the amazing work of Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary, Rey’s pride is back together, spending their days enjoying the sunshine and grasses of South Africa.

Rey’s portrait is available for purchase.  The bits of hand-painted, torn papers that cover this collage contain many images, words, and sentiments that honor Rey’s rescue and journey.  Rich and beautiful, just as this beautiful King deserves.

I donated 20% of the sale of Rey’s portrait directly to Animal Defenders International to
help fund the permanent enclosure for Rey’s pride.

Mahla

Rey’s daughter, Mahla

In a harrowing attempt to rescue the Cusco pride from inhumane conditions at an illegal circus in Peru, only part of the pride was rescued.  The circus would not release cubs Mahla and Scarc.  Their mother cried for her cubs daily until Animal Defenders International was able to return, 11 days later, and rescue them, as well!

Now the cubs live in a beautiful, large permanent enclosure with their parents and the rest of the pride at Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.  Like a good sister, Mahla can be bossy with her brother … but they do love basking in the South African Sun, and playing with the enrichment toys provided at the sanctuary.

Due to the continued dedication of ADI, and the amazing work of Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary, the Cusco pride is all together.  Their rescue and continued support is made possible by everyday donations from people like you.  Thank you!

In addition, Mahla’s portrait is available for purchase.  Mahla gazes into the gold and royal sky, perhaps in a gesture of gratitude for this new life she’s been given.  What a beautiful girl!

**20% of the sale of Mahla’s portrait goes directly to Animal Defenders International to
help fund the permanent enclosure for Mahla’s pride.

 Kiara
Rey’s mate, Kiara
Kiara, the mother of Mahla and Scarc, and the mate of King Rey … powerful and beautiful.  Kiara is best known for being torn from her young cubs during a dangerous rescue in Cusco, Peru.  The circus handlers would not give up her cubs.  Kiara cried for them for 11 days, until circumstances allowed the Animal Defenders International team to go back in and get the cubs under a waning gibbous moon.  I chose to symbolize this with a moon sketch I did some years ago, which found a perfect spot in Kiara’s brow.  Today, they are all together, basking in the African sunshine!  Warrior Queen!
20% of the sale of Kiara’s portrait goes directly to Animal Defenders International to help fund the permanent enclosure for Kiara’s pride.
